Analyst

Surgo combines behavioral science, AI and data science to bring precision to solutions that save and improve lives. With a laser focus on uncovering the ‘why’, we partner with organizations and governments to help unlock some of their biggest challenges. Surgo works on major global issues from COVID in the US to reproductive health in India. Our multidisciplinary team includes development experts, data scientists, behavioral scientists, and technologists who are skilled in collecting and interpreting data on why people behave the way they do and how complex systems work, and in developing scalable tools. We are a small but diverse team with big plans.

Surgo is working on several large-scale development programs in areas such as COVID, reproductive health, maternal health, HIV/AIDs, and tuberculosis.  The Analyst will work at the center of several of Surgo’s innovative programs analyzing data on some of the most urgent problems today.  The role provides an avenue for career growth inside a young and dynamic organization and is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to use their data analysis skills for social impact.

Key duties and responsibilities:                                                                                                                                     

  • Support and lead analysis of data from Surgo’s initiatives, applying, adapting, and integrating innovative data science methodologies to key social impact problems

  • Visualize results for easy interpretation and application of insights, using graphics and layman’s language to communicate them

  • Conduct background research to inform analysis and contextualization of findings in key areas such as COVID, maternal health, reproductive health, and TB

  • Work collaboratively with other Surgo team members in management of data platforms and initiatives

  • Support scientific communication to journals and conferences

  • Be a source of knowledge for the team through the analysis of literature, policy, technology, and business model developments as they relate to Surgo goals

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Excellent data analysis skills in statistical packages such as R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, etc

  • Strong data visualization skills including Tableau and other tools

  • Proficiency with data mining, data validation, data cleaning, and ability to dealing with missing data

  • Proficiency in applying and interpreting statistical methods, including descriptive and regression analysis

  • Experience/familiarity with field data collection, survey design, and other research methods desired

  • Ability to synthesize, distil and present insights using powerful visual formats & clear/concise written format

  • Ability to work independently and within a team

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, self-motivating, and ability to propose new ideas and think out of the box

  • Ability to think strategically, handle ambiguity, and problem solve in a fast-paced, limited-structure, multicultural environment

  • US work permit

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred

  • Experience working in data analysis with real world data

  • Proven track record of conducting independent research projects and supporting teams

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Interest in global health and development

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

  • Willingness to travel if required and at short notice, even to remote places at times.

Compensation: competitive

 Travel: International and national travel (~10-20% once safe to do so)
